The AVANTA Medical Story: From Consulting to Disrupting the Aesthetic Industry

AVANTA Medical story — founder Charles Donaldson and the mission to help med spas grow without overpaying for aesthetic devices

Business

Every company has an origin story. But not every origin story starts with walking away from a corporate success—and choosing to build something better from scratch.

The AVANTA Medical story is exactly that. It’s the story of a consultant who grew a med spa from zero to 124 locations across the US and Canada, watched clinics struggle under the weight of overpriced devices and unnecessary fees, and decided the industry needed a fundamentally different kind of partner. So he built one.

This is the story of how AVANTA went from a consulting business to one of the most disruptive aesthetic device companies in the market—and why it exists to help med spas soar.

The Beginning: Building a Med Spa Empire for Someone Else

Before AVANTA existed, Charles Donaldson was already deep in the aesthetic industry—doing the hard work of growing a med spa business from the ground up. Not just growing it, but scaling it to 124 locations across the United States and Canada.

That’s not a small accomplishment. That’s a career-defining achievement that most people in the industry would spend a lifetime chasing. And by conventional logic, it was exactly the kind of success that should have kept him comfortable, climbing the corporate ladder, collecting a paycheck.

But that’s not what happened.

“I just got to thinking of, I could keep climbing the corporate ladder, keep doing that, making money for another company—or I could go and really have my passion for the smaller med spas and the industry that’s coming up to be able to allow them to make the profits and to do all of that.”

So in 2017, Charles walked away. And AVANTA began.

The Pivot: Starting AVANTA Consulting in 2017

AVANTA didn’t launch as a device company. It launched as a consulting business—built on the belief that smaller, independent med spas deserved the same level of strategic guidance that only large corporate groups typically had access to.

The original vision was straightforward: go in, look at the financials, help practice owners figure out how to become more profitable. Clean and simple.

But reality, as it usually does, had other plans.

“What it really turned into was about a lot of business planning and getting business plans started and helping those med spas actually start up, become profitable, and make an impact in business.”

AVANTA Consulting became a hands-on partner for med spas at every stage—from first business plan to full operation. Charles and his team weren’t just reviewing spreadsheets. They were helping clinics build from the ground up, guiding owners through the decisions that would make or break their practice.

And that’s when a pattern started to emerge that Charles couldn’t ignore.

The Problem No One Was Solving

Getting a med spa profitable isn’t just about good marketing or the right location. One of the biggest variables—and one of the most dangerous—is the cost of aesthetic devices.

As a consultant, Charles had connections with all the major device companies. He referred clients to them as a natural part of his work, building business-to-business relationships and trusting that those partners would help his clients succeed.

That trust didn’t last long.

“After some time, I realized that really, that was making my job impossible. Because it was making it impossible for me to get them up and running and making money within 6 months.”

The culprit? Two things: astronomical upfront device costs and unnecessary consumables.

In the aesthetic industry, consumables are products or components that a device supposedly requires to operate—and many of the biggest device companies have built their entire business model around them. Per-use fees. Proprietary cartridges. Recurring charges that never stop.

“A lot of those consumables are unnecessary. You don’t need them. They’re there just for the device companies to keep making money.”

The result was devastating for small practices. The average markup on aesthetic devices sits at 85%. Clinics were going into debt to buy equipment, then hemorrhaging cash on consumables, while the device companies collected and the med spas struggled to survive.

“The only people making money are the device companies. You’ve got med spas going out of business. It creates a bad name for device companies.”

Charles looked for a better partner. Someone who offered top-quality devices, no unnecessary consumables, and a fair cost structure that actually let his clients build profitable businesses.

He looked everywhere.

“Looked and looked and looked, couldn’t find anything whatsoever.”

The Decision: “I’m Just Going to Do This Myself”

It was 2020. COVID had slowed business across every industry. And Charles Donaldson made a decision that most people would consider either bold or insane—he decided to build the device company he couldn’t find.

“I got to the point where I was like, ‘There’s nobody out there. I’m just gonna do this myself.'”

The timing, while daunting, turned out to be an unexpected advantage. With business slowed by the pandemic, there was time to do things properly—FDA clearance, manufacturing relationships, quality control. No shortcuts. No compromises on the fundamentals.

Was it a risk? Absolutely. Were there people who told him it wouldn’t work?

“Absolutely. I had a lot of competition out there, the big names… ‘How do you plan on keep making money? That’s how we make our money is the consumables, and that’s never gonna work for you.'”

Charles had a different answer—and a different belief about what actually builds a lasting business.

“Our clients, they’re gonna do so well that they’re gonna need their add machine, add devices. They’re gonna add a second, third, fourth location, and they’re gonna be so satisfied with us that they’re gonna be coming to us for those devices.”

That’s not a consumables model. That’s a partnership model. And it’s what AVANTA Medical was built on.

What AVANTA Actually Means

The name AVANTA wasn’t chosen arbitrarily. It carries a meaning that reflects everything the company was built to do.

AVANTA (verb)

1. to soar; rapidly rise above the rest

“Avanta means to soar, and the definition of that being to rapidly rise above the rest. So that’s kind of our mission—to soar, to help other practices soar and become better and better and better.”

It’s a name that describes both the company’s ambition and its purpose. AVANTA isn’t just trying to grow. It’s trying to lift the entire industry—one med spa at a time.

The Mission That Drives Everything

From consulting to devices, from 2017 to today, the core mission of AVANTA has never changed. It can be distilled to one idea:

Help med spas become profitable faster—by removing the barriers that big device companies put in their way.

That means:

  • Gold-standard technology at a fraction of the typical industry markup
  • No unnecessary consumables or per-use fees draining monthly profit
  • Comprehensive training and support included—not sold separately
  • Flexible financing that makes premium devices accessible to practices of all sizes
  • A genuine partnership model built on client success, not client dependency

“It doesn’t take a million dollars in equipment financing to get your practice started. You could do it for less than $300,000. So we’re talking a third of the cost—which when it comes to paying your bills and making money, that’s a huge factor.”

This philosophy—born in consulting, tested in the field, and built into every device and every client relationship—is what separates AVANTA from the rest of the market.

The Advice Charles Gives Every Practice Owner

After years of consulting, building, and watching the industry evolve, Charles Donaldson’s advice to med spa owners is consistent—and it’s grounded in everything AVANTA was built to address.

Don’t overpay for devices. Don’t underestimate the cost of consumables. Don’t start with one device and expect to grow your business around a narrow treatment menu. And don’t assume you need a million dollars in financing to get started.

“Making sure they have the right devices—but at the same time, making sure that they’re not skimping on devices and they’re only starting with this device. When you have a practice, if you start with just laser hair removal or just CO2 and injectables, you’re narrowing your market to just that device.”

The goal is to launch properly equipped, with the right device mix for your market, at a cost structure that lets you become profitable fast—not someday, not after years of servicing debt. Fast.

That’s what AVANTA was built to make possible. And that’s the mission it’s been executing on ever since Charles made the call to stop looking for the right partner and start being one.
